Jazzy Roo’s story

This is how kangaroos began. There was Mr Can, and there was Ms Go.

Mr Can could make anything work. Show him a broken thing, a tangled thing, a thing nobody understood, and he would turn it over twice and understand it. He studied the living world and wrote down what he found in a careful hand. If Mr Can said a thing was so, it was so. People called him Trusty Can.

Ms Go could make anything happen. Where Can studied, Go decided. She built the finest fashion house in the world out of nothing but taste and nerve. People called her Strong Go, and they were not being polite — they were being accurate.

When they married, two children came, and both were given the name Roo. The elder boy was always at the centre of things and took particular care over how he dressed and over the smallest details, so they called him Jazzy Roo. The younger girl was so lovely, and so dear, that everyone wanted to hug her — and so she became Huggy Roo.

The neighbours were fond of that family and decided it ought to have a name of its own. In the end one of them said: well, this is the household of Can and Go, and the children are called Roo. And so they called them the CanGoRoos.

In time, as words do, it wore into something easier to say, and in the end it became kangaroos.

You may think otherwise. But this is where the history of kangaroos begins.
